In March of 2003, on the eve of the Iraq War, a student at Rio Rancho High School read an anti-war poem over the school’s intercom system. That same week, a peaceful protest against the war in front of the University of New Mexico erupted into civil disorder when over a hundred police officers stormed the demonstration and tear-gassed the protesters.
